Coaching for Storytelling
Sharing stories is a powerful learning tool for safety improvement. Stories are often the most meaningful part of meetings, conferences, retreats, or project kickoffs. A patient, resident, or family member’s personal healthcare story can have lasting impact. When the patient or resident is well-prepared, this makes for a more memorable listener experience. Knowing that his/her healthcare story is well understood by the audience and promotes change often provides a sense of purpose and healing for the patient or resident.
Our patient engagement specialist meets with your patient or resident for 1-3 sessions (staff invited as well), to help draw out important learning opportunities and practice for a confident delivery. For more information on the process, email Lisa Juliar, Patient and Safety Family Engagement.
“The coaching session with Lisa was invaluable – she helped me to craft a story with powerful visual images and by interviewing me, helped me get to the core of what I wanted to communicate. Without her help, I think I would have been too business-like and lacking in emotional expression.” – A.A., Person/Family Advisor
“It was so valuable having Lisa come to coach person/family advisors how to share their stories as part of the impact program. Lisa was kind, gentle, articulate, and thoughtful in her approach. Lisa drew out the best parts of our advisors’ stories, including the humor, the passion, and the perspective that our advisors brought to the table. She also helped the advisors share the most impactful parts of their stories in a short amount of time. Staff members contacted me after the program to mention how beneficial it was to hear the advisors’ stories, to follow up with advisors, and to express how grateful they were to have the advisors join us. 95% of participants wanted to involve person/family advisors in future projects after their experience with the impact program. Lisa was truly amazing in how well she prepared our advisors for this role.” - Quality Improvement Coordinator, M Health Fairview
