Domain 2: Leadership
Because a review of the literature shows that leaders’ personal commitment to patient safety is the most critical element to advancing a safety culture, all roadmap users must complete this section before advancing through other roadmap sections. Individual sets of strategies and tactics are designed for the governing body, CEO/administrator, human resources team (if available) clinician leaders, and managers. Strategies and tactics generally are organized around the theme of setting clear safety expectations by using consistent communication, assigning resources, incentivizing safety, establishing clear policies and procedures, and other techniques. Human resources team members support this work by helping leaders identify, evaluate, and ensure accountability to expected safety competencies among direct reports.
