How to Use the Roadmap

 WHAT TO DO FIRST

The first step in using the roadmap is to conduct a baseline audit of current culture practices.  Click  here to access the audit questions for ALL domains. The baseline audit consists of answering whether or not each of the best practices on the roadmap are in place within the roadmap users' organization.

After determining which of the best practices are not in place, the organization can create an action plan to prioritize and implement these practices. Combining findings from the roadmap audit with identified target areas from a culture survey, such as the AHRQ culture survey, can assist organizations in prioritizing efforts.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

  1. IF POSSIBLE, complete the Getting Started and Leadership roadmap sections first. Research has repeatedly shown that leadership is the critical success factor to a patient safety culture. Completing these two sections provides a solid foundation for success.

  2. Initially target one or two domains for significant new work. The data gathering and assessment that occurs during the baseline audit question assessment will help you choose one or more domains. Launching significant new work in multiple domains at the same time is not recommended. As projects reach a sustainment phase, the roadmap can be revisited and new projects can be added.

  3. Integrate roadmap work with existing safety projects. Roadmap users are encouraged to evaluate all current safety projects for how they can integrate into the evidence-based practices recommended in the Roadmap.
  4. Use Effective Process Improvement concurrently with each module to Sustain the Culture Initiative. [DOC]
