About Us

MAPS works toward its mission of safe care everywhere by engaging a diverse stakeholder coalition that includes a devoted a Board of Directorsmembership leadersdedicated staff, and member group that broadly represent Minnesota's healthcare community.  MAPS focuses on educational programming, novel projects, patient and family engagement, and collaboration across all care settings.

In August of 2017, MAPS became a subsidiary of Stratis Health.  As one of MAPS' founding members, Stratis Health leads collaboration and innovation in healthcare quality and safety, serving as a trusted expert in facilitating improvement for people and communities. Stratis Health envisions a healthcare system that supports an informed activated consumer and competent satisfied healthcare professionals working in settings that promote optimum care and reduce chance of error.

Throughout its first decade of work, MAPS brought new standards around informed consent, medication safety, and culture of safety to the Minnesota community. In its second decade, MAPS is expanding these efforts and tackling other emerging topics in patient safety, including patient and family engagement, diagnostic error, and transitions of care.  Please contact us to learn how to get involved in MAPS.

MAPS Overarching Strategic Priority:

MAPS will engage with patients, providers and the community for better and safer healthcare across the continuum.

Strategic Priorities: The Three E's

MAPS Commitment to DEI:

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Statement for

Minnesota Alliance for Patient Safety

The mission of Minnesota Alliance for Patient Safety (MAPS) is safe care everywhere. We believe that a diverse and inclusive environment is essential for achieving our mission and improving health outcomes across the state of Minnesota. We understand that harm occurs in multiple ways, not only in the medical outcomes of care but in how patients and families are treated. As Dr. Don Berwick stated, lack of dignity is harm. As a result, MAPS is dedicated to fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our work and in our engagement and support of others who share our commitment safety.

Our Commitment to Diversity:

  • We recognize and value the diversity of perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences that individuals from various communities bring to the work of MAPS.
  • We are committed to creating an environment where all individuals, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, ability, religion, or any other dimension of diversity, feel welcome, respected, and valued.
  • We believe that diverse perspectives enrich our understanding of patient safety and allows us to develop more comprehensive solutions to improve patient safety.

Our Commitment to Equity:

  • We are dedicated to ensuring equity in all our endeavors.
  • We understand that historical and systemic inequities have led to disparities in healthcare access and outcomes across the entire continuum of health care.
  • We are committed to identifying and addressing these disparities in patient safety through our programs, initiatives, and collaborations.
  • By promoting fairness and impartiality, and by fostering a culture of awareness about inequities built into structures and services, we strive to create a level playing field where everyone has the opportunity to achieve their highest potential.
  • Promoting fairness, impartiality, and fostering a culture of awareness are essential steps in promoting equity in various aspects of society, including workplaces, education, and communities.
  • Equity is about ensuring that everyone has equal opportunities and access to resources and benefits, regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances.

Our Commitment to Inclusion:

  • Inclusion is at the heart of our efforts.
  • We actively seek to create an inclusive environment where every voice is heard, and every contribution is valued.
  • We encourage open dialogue and constructive conversations that lead to innovative solutions.
  • By actively engaging diverse perspectives and lived experience, we enhance our ability to develop strategies that resonate with the entire community we serve.

Actionable Steps: To uphold our DEI commitments, we will:

  1. Continuously educate ourselves and our team members about DEI topics.
  2. Assess our programs, policies, and practices to identify and remove any barriers to participation and advancement.
  3. Collaborate with community partners and stakeholders who share our commitment to DEI.
  4. Strive to increase diversity in leadership positions and decision-making roles within our organization.
  5. Support initiatives that address healthcare disparities and promote equitable patient safety outcomes.
  6. Seek out and listen to the voices of marginalized and underrepresented groups to better understand their unique needs and challenges.
  7. Regularly review and refine our DEI goals and strategies to ensure ongoing progress.
  8. Proactively engage with clinicians, patients, and families whose perspectives and experiences have been underrepresented in understanding patient safety and take action to serve and support their needs.
  9. Help our staff, board, and volunteers to have the language and skills to confront racism and other forms of discrimination.
